Finding Your Gift

Most people know right off the bat what their God-given creative gift is. They seem to have been literally born with a natural talent that has guided them through life, or discovered it later, taking a creative class on a whim and finding an affinity for whatever it is. Even others have developed a skill — perhaps not one that they were naturally born with — using the resources God set before them! Some people seem to just know what they’re supposed to do with their lives.

For some people it is easy. For others, there is a calling to create, but no clue where to even begin. For others, they have been pursuing various creative avenues, but each and every one of them has reached a dead-end. They know they are called to create, but exactly what their creative gift (whether talent or skill) feels like its trying to hide.

If you are feeling like you don’t know what your gift is, or you are stuck at one of many creative dead-ends, the Number One, sounds-super-cliche, Bible-guaranteed solution to your problem is to pray for wisdom.

Well, that seems easy, but what if God doesn’t give me any? or, perhaps I’ve already tried that and it doesn’t work!

Both questions have the same answer: God, in the Bible, guarantees that He will provide wisdom to those who ask for it. He guarantees that if you are following Him, He will teach you and lead you to where you need to go and what you need to do. This really isn’t a matter of creativity or of the gift itself, it’s a matter of faith. Do you believe that God will lead you to your gift? Or lead you away from what isn’t your gift? Do you trust Him to provide you with wisdom when you earnestly seek it?

Now, an important thing to note is that wisdom from God does not necessarily mean He is going to whisper the answer into your ear using actual words. Sometimes He speaks to us more practically, guiding the intellect He gave us to the correct answer. All those creative dead-ends? They likely indicate you should try to pursue something else. Something you’ve been half-pursuing that seems to be working, but didn’t line up with how you wanted your creative journey to go? Maybe try that instead, see if it sticks. Perhaps try something completely and totally new that you never would have in a million years thought you had a talent in or could develop a skill in. He might give you the answer directly, or He might work to guide your exploration of all the creativity He has to offer.

Regardless of the problem, trust that God is not going to hide from you when you earnestly seek His guidance and wisdom!

Putting it into Action

Do you know what your gift is, Christian creative? It can be either a talent you were born with naturally or a skill God spent time developing in you. If you do know, fantastic! Take time to praise God for how He has created you and how He has led you to your gift!

If you don’t know what your gift is, however, set aside some time to lay all your frustrations, questions, and curiosities at the feet of God. Then ask Him for wisdom. Ask Him to guide you to the answers you seek, to lead you as He’s promised to do in the Bible. And then don’t fight Him on it! He might lead you to a place you never would have thought to go, but is exactly where HE needs you do be.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.”
— Psalm 32:8
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.
— James 1:5
